About

Why we built Newslish

Most English learning apps teach you textbook English — grammar rules, isolated vocabulary, sentences nobody actually says. After years of study, learners can pass an exam but struggle to read a newspaper or follow a conversation about current events.

Newslish was built around a different idea: the best way to learn real English is through real news.

Every day we publish one article from a real news source, adapted into three difficulty levels — Easy, Standard, and Advanced. You pick your level, read the article, listen to the audio, review the key vocabulary in context, and take a short quiz. Then you come back tomorrow and do it again.

The method is simple. The results compound over time.

Who it's for

Newslish is designed for intermediate and upper-intermediate English learners — people who already know the basics but want to read, listen, and think in English with confidence. It's also useful for advanced learners who want to stay sharp and expand their vocabulary around current topics.

Free, no ads

The core Newslish experience is free. No ads, no paywalls on today's lesson. A premium tier called Newslish Plus is coming with streak tracking, full archive, and saved vocabulary. We believe the daily lesson itself should always stay free.

Who built this

I'm Henry, from Bergen, Norway. I built Newslish because I felt that every English learning app looks like it was built for children. Full of cartoon characters, badge systems, and sentences nobody would ever say in real life.

I wanted something more serious, lightweight, and actually useful for adults who just want to read the news in real English. Not a course. Not a game. Just one good article a day, adapted to your level, with the vocabulary and comprehension tools built in.

I started with a simple question: what if learning English felt like reading the morning news instead of doing homework? Newslish is my answer to that question.

I'm building this in public, improving it based on real feedback, and keeping it free for as long as I can. If you have thoughts, ideas, or just want to say hello, reach out. I read every message.
