Frequently asked questions

How does the English text level checker work?

It combines classic readability formulas (Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch–Kincaid grade level, based on sentence length and syllables) with a vocabulary-frequency check that measures how many words fall outside the most common English words. Together these estimate a CEFR band from A1 to C2.

What do CEFR levels A1 to C2 mean?

CEFR is the international standard for language ability. A1 and A2 are beginner and elementary, B1 and B2 are intermediate and upper-intermediate, and C1 and C2 are advanced and proficient. Most graded readers and exam materials are labelled with these levels.

Is the text level checker free?

Yes. It is completely free, runs in your browser, and does not require an account. Nothing you paste is stored or sent to a server.

How accurate is the CEFR estimate?

It is a fast automated estimate, not an official assessment. It is reliable for comparing texts and grading reading material, but a real CEFR rating also considers grammar and topic. To find your own level, take the free placement test.
