Frequently asked questions

How is a word's CEFR level decided?

This tool estimates each word's CEFR level (A1–C2) from how frequent it is in English: the most common words are A1–A2, and rarer words are B2–C2. It is a transparent frequency-based estimate, not an official CEFR rating, but it is a fast, consistent way to gauge and grade vocabulary.

Can I check a whole vocabulary list at once?

Yes. Paste a word list or any English text and the tool labels every unique word by level and gives you a 'study list' grouped A1–C2 that you can copy — handy for teachers preparing levelled materials.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is completely free with no sign-up. It runs in your browser, so nothing you paste is sent to a server.

What is the difference from the text level checker?

The word level checker rates individual words; the text level checker rates a whole passage's reading difficulty. Use the word checker to grade vocabulary, and the text checker to see if an article is the right level.
